Peptides and Women: The Research That Actually Studied Female Subjects
Most peptide data comes from male animals and male volunteers, which makes the studies that enrolled women unusually interesting. A map of the female-subject research, what it found, and where the record is still blank.

Annaliese Beery and Irving Zucker did something nobody had bothered to do properly: they counted the sexes. Taking a full year of published biology across ten fields, they found male bias in eight, and in neuroscience single-sex studies of male animals outnumbered single-sex studies of females five and a half to one. The usual excuse, that female animals are too hormonally variable to bother with, they called flatly "without foundation" (PMID: 20620164). Which leaves a question over almost every peptide you can read about: when a paper says a compound did something, who did it happen to? Often the honest answer is "male mice". Not always, though, and the exceptions are the most interesting corner of the field, worth a look before you browse our research peptides.
This article is about the literature and who was in it, not about anybody's body. It maps where female subjects appear: two early-phase trials run entirely in postmenopausal women, the peptide whose potency swings more than a hundredfold depending on the week, the oxytocin scan that came out backwards, the melanocortin whose registration trials enrolled nobody else, and where the record stops. Everything Crown Peptides stocks that appears below, ACE-031 Research Peptide and Kisspeptin-10 Research Peptide among them, is sold for laboratory research only.
The Five-and-a-Half-to-One Problem
How one sex became the default
It was not one decision but a century of small conveniences. The argument ran like this: female rodents have a four-to-five-day hormonal rhythm, so their data will be noisier, so you need more animals, so the study costs more. Beery and Zucker tested that belief against the published record and found it did not hold. Worse, studies that did include both sexes frequently failed to analyse results by sex, so the information was collected and then averaged away (PMID: 20620164). A decade-on audit of 34 journals across nine disciplines found a statistically significant rise in studies including both sexes, but in eight of the nine no increase at all in studies analysing data by sex, and most single-sex designs gave no rationale at all; those that did fell back on the variability misconception (PMID: 32513386).
The pregnancy question nobody solved cleanly
Human trials have a second mechanism. Researchers at Penn State read the protocols of 688 US phase 2 and phase 3 trials of type 2 diabetes medicines enrolling adults aged 18 to 40. Fifty-nine per cent carried at least one fertility-related exclusion; 55 per cent excluded pregnancy, 44 per cent breastfeeding. The exclusions barely tracked risk: trials of drugs with evidence of fetal harm in animals were less likely to exclude pregnancy than trials of drugs with no known fetal risk, 45.6 per cent against 69.8 per cent (PMID: 27208329). Caution had become habit rather than calculation.
Why it matters biologically
If male and female physiology were interchangeable, none of this would matter. A Nature Reviews Immunology survey sets out how the two differ across innate and adaptive immunity, some differences lasting a lifetime and others appearing only between puberty and reproductive senescence, feeding into autoimmune disease rates and vaccine responses (PMID: 27546235). Fat behaves differently too: more is held subcutaneously before menopause, with a shift to the visceral depot afterwards and a rise in metabolic risk the authors compare to the male pattern (PMID: 25578600). Peptides act on both of those systems, which is why the question of who was in the study is not a technicality.

The Phase 1 Trials That Enrolled Nobody But Women
Here is the twist: the caution that kept women out of so many trials occasionally put them first, because a postmenopausal volunteer carries no pregnancy risk.
Forty-eight women, one administration, measurable muscle
ACE-031 is an engineered decoy for the activin receptor type IIB; our ACE-031 guide covers how it works. Its single ascending-dose study was double-blind and placebo-controlled, allocating three of every four of its 48 healthy postmenopausal volunteers to a single dose and the rest to placebo. At day 29 in the highest-dose group, total body lean mass by DXA had risen a statistically significant 3.3 per cent and thigh muscle volume by MRI 5.1 per cent, with serum biomarker shifts the authors read as changes in bone and fat metabolism too (PMID: 23169607). One administration, measurable muscle growth four weeks later, every participant female. It sits in our Musculoskeletal research peptides category.
Fifty-eight women, and one muscle at a time
Its successor went local. ACE-083 is follistatin-based and stays where it is placed, so the phase 1 study put it into one named muscle on one side only, the rectus femoris or the tibialis anterior. Fifty-eight postmenopausal women were enrolled, 42 to ACE-083 and 16 to placebo. Maximum mean increases in muscle volume were 14.5 per cent in the rectus femoris and 8.9 per cent in the tibialis anterior, with no serious adverse events and no significant change in muscle strength (PMID: 29486514).
Bigger muscle and unchanged strength are two different results, and the paper reported both — which is what makes these two studies the female muscle literature's best imaging data. See Best Peptides Being Researched for Muscle Growth.
Kisspeptin: The Peptide Whose Answer Depends on the Week
If you want one reason not to average the sexes together, this is it. When researchers at Imperial College London gave kisspeptin, the signal above GnRH, to female volunteers, the results refused to behave like a single number.
The same compound, four different answers
Eight healthy women with regular monthly rhythms were given a bolus of kisspeptin-54, and LH rose in every phase tested. The size of that rise depended entirely on when it arrived. Follicular: 0.12 IU/litre above baseline. Luteal: 2.17. Preovulatory: 20.64 (PMID: 17635940). That is a spread of more than a hundredfold on the paper's own means, in the same volunteers at the same amount, though the follicular figure is too small to separate from zero. A molecule whose potency swings two orders of magnitude depending on the day cannot be characterised in men and called finished.
Ten amino acids, two sexes, two outcomes
The shorter fragment made the point harder. Kisspeptin-10 is the active ten-amino-acid tail of the natural kisspeptins, and it works in rodents of both sexes. In humans, a head-to-head comparison in groups of four or five found LH and FSH rose in healthy men at 0.3 and 1.0 nmol/kg. In healthy women in the follicular phase, nothing happened: no change after intravenous bolus, subcutaneous bolus or infusion, up to 10 nmol/kg, 32 nmol/kg and 720 pmol/kg/min. In the preovulatory phase the same bolus did raise both. The authors titled the paper for what they found: sexual dimorphism (PMID: 21976724). Run the male arm alone and you would have reported that kisspeptin-10 stimulates gonadotropin release in humans. Incomplete. Our guide Kisspeptin-10: The Peptide That Turned Out to Be the Master Switch for Puberty covers the discovery; Kisspeptin-10 vs Oxytocin sets it beside another signal.
When the axis had already gone quiet
The same group then worked with women whose reproductive axis had shut down, five per group. On day one, subcutaneous kisspeptin-54 produced mean maximal rises within four hours of 24.0 IU/litre for LH and 9.1 for FSH. By the fourteenth injection day those had collapsed to 2.5 and 0.5, while responses to GnRH remained intact, which pointed at desensitisation above the pituitary rather than at the pituitary itself (PMID: 19820030). A useful negative result, because delivery pattern would matter as much as the molecule. That story begins in What Is GnRH?; synthetic GnRH is stocked as Gonadorelin Acetate Research Peptide and covered in our Gonadorelin guide.
From a reproductive peptide to a hot flush
Now the connection nobody saw coming. In the hypothalamus, kisspeptin is made by neurons that also make neurokinin B and dynorphin, known as KNDy neurons, and those neurons change markedly after menopause. A team at the University of Arizona destroyed them in the rat arcuate nucleus using a toxin selective for neurokinin-3-expressing cells. Tail-skin temperature fell consistently, indicating that the neurons facilitate cutaneous vasodilatation, one of the body's main heat-dumping tools; ablation also blocked oestradiol's ability to lower skin temperature during the light phase (PMID: 23150555).
The hypothesis has since been tested at scale. SKYLIGHT 1, a phase 3 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study across 97 sites in seven countries, randomised 527 women aged 40 to 65 having seven or more moderate-to-severe hot flushes a day to placebo or to fezolinetant, a neurokinin-3 receptor blocker. Both active groups showed significant reductions in frequency and severity at weeks 4 and 12, maintained over 52 weeks (PMID: 36924778). Fezolinetant is a small molecule rather than a peptide, and not a Crown product: it was developed as a medicine and licensed by the MHRA in December 2023 as Veoza, for moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. The target was found by following peptide biology in female animals for twenty years.
Oxytocin Looked Different the Moment Women Were Scanned
Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid peptide studied in men for years before anyone put women in the scanner. A functional MRI study in Germany did: sixteen women viewed fearful, angry, happy and neutral faces after a single intranasal administration of oxytocin or placebo, each her own control. Signal rose in the left amygdala, fusiform gyrus and superior temporal gyrus to fearful faces. Earlier work in men had found oxytocin reducing amygdala reactivity to comparable stimuli. The authors wrote that their results were "at odds with the previously reported effects found in men", and called for both sexes in future work (PMID: 19632787).
Sixteen women is a small study, argued over since. But the direction of the effect pointed the other way, and that cannot be fixed by recruiting more men. Crown supplies Oxytocin Acetate Research Peptide in both the Endocrine & Hormonal research peptides and Neurocognitive categories; our Oxytocin guide covers the molecule.
The Melanocortin Whose Phase 3 Trials Enrolled Only Women
One research peptide has a late-stage trial record made up almost entirely of female participants, and it is not the one most people would guess.
Bremelanotide, known in research as PT-141, is a synthetic alpha-MSH analogue agonising the melanocortin receptors MC3R and MC4R. Its proof-of-concept study was a double-blind crossover in eighteen premenopausal women with female sexual arousal disorder. More reported moderate or high sexual desire after bremelanotide than after placebo (P = 0.0114), and among those who attempted intercourse within 24 hours, significantly more were satisfied with their arousal (P = 0.0256). Vaginal vasocongestion, measured by photoplethysmography, did not change significantly (PMID: 16839319). Subjective measures moved; the objective one did not.
It ended in two identical phase 3 placebo-controlled trials, together called RECONNECT, which randomised 1,267 women of mean age 39 to 24 weeks of bremelanotide or placebo. Both found significant increases in sexual desire and reductions in distress related to low desire against placebo, with nausea, flushing and headache more common on bremelanotide (PMID: 31599840). That programme ended in a medicine: as Vyleesi, bremelanotide was approved by the US FDA in June 2019 for acquired, generalised hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. Crown's PT-141 Research Peptide is a laboratory research material and not that medicine; PT-141: The First Melanocortin Receptor Agonist to Clear FDA Review has the regulatory history.
Growth Hormone: Same Axis, Completely Different Rhythm
The growth hormone peptides are where the female gap is widest, and the irony is that the sex difference in the axis was documented decades ago. A study at the University of Michigan profiled pulsatile growth hormone secretion in young men and women, then infused recombinant IGF-1 to test the feedback loop. The baseline patterns were not variations on a theme but different shapes: men showed large nocturnal pulses and small daytime ones, women more continuous secretion with more frequent pulses of more uniform size. The feedback diverged too. IGF-1 strongly suppressed spontaneous and GHRH-driven release in men; in women it had less effect on pulsatile secretion and did not suppress the GHRH response at all (PMID: 9649569).
Consider what that means for a GHRH analogue. Sermorelin Research Peptide is GHRH's first 29 amino acids; Tesamorelin Research Peptide is the whole 44-amino-acid hormone with a protective cap. Both act on a system whose pulse architecture and brake differ by sex, yet male-versus-female comparisons for the research-grade secretagogues, Ipamorelin Research Peptide included, are scarce. Growth Hormone Peptides Explained covers the family, and Peptide Hormones Explained explains why these messengers arrive in pulses.
Skin and Collagen: Where Female Volunteers Were the Norm
Women were not the exception in this corner of the field but the entire sample. In 1983, skin biopsies were taken from 29 postmenopausal women who had received no hormone replacement and 26 age-matched women given oestrogen and testosterone implants for two to ten years. Mean hydroxyproline, and therefore mean skin collagen, was 48 per cent greater in the treated group (PMID: 6416400). A follow-up by the same team found that in the untreated women both thigh skin collagen and the metacarpal index fell with years since menopause, and that the two tracked each other — skin and bone as one connective-tissue story (PMID: 3828252).
The supplement side of the same question went the same way. Oral collagen peptides are a food supplement, not a research compound, but their trials were designed around female participants from the start. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial run at the University of Kiel randomised 69 women aged 35 to 55 to one of two daily amounts of specific collagen peptides, or to placebo, for eight weeks. Skin elasticity, the primary endpoint, improved significantly against placebo in both active groups, and was still higher in the older women four weeks on. Moisture and water loss moved favourably in subgroup analysis but missed significance, and the authors said so (PMID: 23949208).
The copper peptide is where the story thins out. GHK is a tripeptide found in human plasma, saliva and urine whose level falls with age, thought to act as a complex with copper. A review by its discoverer, Loren Pickart, gathers the cell and animal work: GHK-copper stimulating collagen and glycosaminoglycan turnover, modulating metalloproteinases, restoring replicative vitality to irradiated fibroblasts and inducing systemic wound healing in rats, mice and pigs (PMID: 26236730). Pickart's company sells copper-peptide products, worth knowing when reading a narrative review. What that literature does not yet contain is a large controlled human trial reporting results by sex.
GHK-Cu Research Peptide sits in our Tissue Biology research peptides and Ageing & Cellular categories, alongside AHK-Cu Research Peptide. Three guides go further: our GHK-Cu guide, Collagen Peptides vs Copper Peptides and What Are the Best-Researched Peptides for Skin, Hair and Nails?
Bone and Lean Mass: The Strongest Female Dataset of All
Teriparatide is the first 34 amino acids of parathyroid hormone, made synthetically. Its pivotal trial randomised 1,637 postmenopausal women with prior vertebral fractures to one of two amounts or to placebo, median 21 months. New vertebral fractures occurred in 14 per cent of the placebo group against 5 and 4 per cent on the peptide, and lumbar spine density rose 9 and 13 percentage points more than placebo, though the higher amount lowered radial shaft density by 2 points more (PMID: 11346808). Teriparatide is a licensed UK medicine for osteoporosis, not a Crown product; it is here because it shows a peptide question can be settled in women when someone decides to.
Beside it sits a smaller study: 131 postmenopausal women with age-related low bone density, randomised to a daily dose of specific collagen peptides or placebo for a year. T-scores at spine and femoral neck rose significantly against control, the bone-formation marker P1NP rose in the active group, and the bone-breakdown marker CTX-1 rose in the control group instead (PMID: 29337906). Put that beside ACE-031's bone biomarker shifts: three unrelated mechanisms, three bone findings in female populations.
Metabolism: Where Sex Changes the Answer Outright
A GLP-1 trial run only in women
Liraglutide, a GLP-1 analogue, was tested in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 study in women with obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome: 55 active, 27 placebo, 32 weeks, lifestyle intervention in both arms. Body weight changed by -5.7 per cent against -1.4 per cent on placebo, and the free androgen index fell in the active group while rising slightly on placebo. Gastrointestinal events, mostly mild to moderate, affected 58.2 per cent against 18.5 per cent (PMID: 35710599). A women-only trial with both a metabolic and a hormonal endpoint. Is Ozempic a Peptide? explains the class; Best Peptides for Weight Loss Research maps our Metabolic research peptides.
When the same gene deletion gives different answers in each sex
This is the sharpest example of the lot. NNMT is the enzyme targeted by 5-Amino-1MQ Research Compound, and a German and Sanofi collaboration tested it in both sexes, with knockout mice and antisense knockdown on obesity-inducing diets. In Western-diet-fed females, knockdown reduced body weight, fat mass and insulin and improved glucose tolerance. Knockout males on a high-fat diet showed strongly improved insulin sensitivity; knockout females gained less weight and carried less fat. Yet glucose tolerance did not improve in the knockout animals at all, and the authors' summary was sex- and diet-specific differences in body composition, weight, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity (PMID: 30552109). Our article 5-Amino-1MQ: Blocking the Enzyme That Tells Fat Cells to Store has the pathway.
A mitochondrial peptide tested through pregnancy
MOTS-c is a short peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA, acting on skeletal muscle glucose handling. A group at the Women's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University built a mouse model of gestational diabetes and gave MOTS-c daily through pregnancy. Blood glucose fell, insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance improved, and birth weight and offspring deaths caused by the model fell (PMID: 34798268). A mouse study, clearly, but run entirely in pregnant females, which is rare enough to name. See MOTS-c Research Peptide and our MOTS-c guide.
NAD and the female cell
NAD research has a small but genuine female-subject thread. A team in Zhengzhou measured NAD in granulosa cells from women with polycystic ovary syndrome and found it significantly lower than in controls, with more reactive oxygen species and less ATP; in an inflamed human granulosa-like cell line, the NAD precursor nicotinamide riboside largely restored NAD content and mitochondrial function (PMID: 34056649). Cell and tissue work rather than a trial, but female tissue, which is more than most of the NAD literature can say. See NAD+ Research Compound and our NAD+ guide.
Repair, Immunity and Ageing: Where the Record Is Still Male
Tissue repair is the clearest case: the large rodent literature behind BPC-157 Research Peptide and TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4) Research Peptide is overwhelmingly male. The exceptions stand out. A Croatian group ran BPC-157 through two stress urinary incontinence models in female rats and reported that every regimen counteracted the fall in leak point pressure, with more desmin, smooth muscle actin and CD34 positivity in the urethral wall (PMID: 23478678). The same laboratory reported healing of surgically created rectovaginal fistulas in female rats (PMID: 26872976). Two rodent studies, in a literature of hundreds. See our BPC-157 guide and TB-500 guide.
Immunology is a near-miss. Male and female immune responses diverge substantially (PMID: 27546235), which makes immune peptides the obvious place to split results by sex. Almost nobody does. Whether a thymic peptide acts the same way on T-cell populations that already differ between the sexes is unanswered for Thymosin Alpha-1 Research Peptide, and for LL-37 Research Peptide.
The bioregulators sit between the two. The Khavinson literature holds at least one women-only clinical report: a Russian-language paper in middle-aged and elderly women with heart disease and hypertension, whose authors reported that Epithalamin improved lipid metabolism and reduced diurnal arterial pressure (PMID: 18546838). Epithalamin is the pineal peptide extract rather than the synthetic tetrapeptide, the abstract gives no participant numbers, and no replication is indexed. The synthetic version, Epitalon Research Peptide, sits in our Ageing & Cellular research peptides and Bioregulators categories; Bioregulator Peptides Explained tells the story.
What Nobody Has Studied Yet
- Secretagogues and pulse shape. Growth hormone secretion has a different shape and feedback response in women (PMID: 9649569), yet male-versus-female comparisons for the research-grade GHRH analogues and ghrelin mimetics barely exist.
- The rest of the monthly rhythm. Kisspeptin's answer moved more than a hundredfold across phases (PMID: 17635940). Almost no other peptide has been characterised that way in women.
- Before and after menopause. Fat distribution and metabolic risk shift markedly at menopause (PMID: 25578600), and the two cleanest female muscle trials were run in postmenopausal volunteers. Whether the same results appear earlier is unknown.
Several compounds above have never had a published sex-stratified analysis. There, running both sexes and reporting by sex is not box-ticking. It is the finding.
The Technical Breakdown: Oestrogen, Receptors and Why Sex Is a Variable Rather Than a Nuisance
The article above stands on its own; this is the mechanism, for readers who want it.
Three places sex can change a peptide result
First, upstream, in how much signal is released: kisspeptin neurons are directly sensitive to oestradiol, which is why the same administration gives a 0.12 IU/litre LH rise in one phase and 20.64 in another (PMID: 17635940). Second, at the receptor and its coupling: IGF-1 suppressed GHRH-driven growth hormone release in men but not in women, pointing at the hypothalamic end of the loop rather than the pituitary (PMID: 9649569). Third, downstream in the tissue measured: subcutaneous and visceral depots respond differently to oestrogens, receptor signalling on adipocytes influencing how readily each expands (PMID: 25578600). And the old objection of statistical noise is self-defeating: once phase was recorded, the "variability" turned out to be the answer tracking the hormonal environment across two orders of magnitude.
The KNDy circuit, and traps versus agonists
KNDy neurons in the arcuate nucleus co-express kisspeptin, neurokinin B and dynorphin, and sit upstream of both the reproductive axis and the body's heat-dissipation circuitry; destroying neurokinin-3-expressing cells there lowered tail-skin temperature and abolished oestradiol's light-phase effect on it, the basis for targeting that receptor rather than the oestrogen receptor (PMID: 23150555). Kisspeptin-10 Research Peptide is the C-terminal fragment that activates KISS1R. ACE-031 and ACE-083, by contrast, are engineered ligand traps, one system-wide and one staying where it is placed; bremelanotide is a short cyclic alpha-MSH analogue agonising MC3R and MC4R. Three strategies, three programmes that enrolled women.
Replicating a Rare Study Starts With Knowing What Is in the Vial
If the published female data on your question is one or two papers, there is no large literature to average out an error. The material has to be right first time.
A certificate of analysis does for a vial what a methods section does for a trial: it says what was actually in it. Ours are published per batch on the Lab Reports page, keyed to the number printed on your vial, with HPLC for purity and mass spectrometry for identity. The identity half earns its keep here: kisspeptin-10 and oxytocin both end in an amide, worth about one mass unit, oxytocin closes a disulphide ring worth two more, and PT-141 is cyclic, so the ring is the molecule. How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis, Peptide Testing UK and How to Tell If Peptides Are Real go line by line.
Vials leave freeze-dried, cold and sealed. A weekday order placed before 2pm is dispatched that day, UK delivery is free on orders over £100, and questions sent to our contact page are answered within a working day, sooner over WhatsApp.

Common Questions About Peptides and Female Research Subjects
Which peptides have actually been studied in women?
More than most people expect. Kisspeptin-54 and kisspeptin-10 have gone to healthy female volunteers and to women whose axis had stopped; bremelanotide's phase 3 programme randomised 1,267 women; ACE-031 and ACE-083 ran first-in-human studies in 48 and 58 postmenopausal women; teriparatide's fracture trial enrolled 1,637; and liraglutide has a women-only PCOS trial.
Were peptide studies done in women or in men?
Both, unevenly, and the imbalance is worse in animal work: male bias in eight of ten biological fields, 5.5 to 1 in neuroscience (PMID: 20620164). Human trials improved after the 1993 US enrolment requirement, but a 2020 re-audit found that including both sexes still rarely means analysing results by sex (PMID: 32513386).
Why were postmenopausal women chosen for those early trials?
Because first-in-human studies are designed to minimise unknown risk, and a postmenopausal volunteer removes pregnancy from the equation. Across 688 US phase 2 and 3 diabetes trials, 59 per cent carried a fertility-related exclusion that did not track fetal risk (PMID: 27208329).
What does the research say about peptides and menopause?
The most developed strand is a peptide circuit rather than a peptide product. KNDy neurons, which make kisspeptin alongside neurokinin B and dynorphin, change after menopause; ablating neurokinin-3-expressing cells in rats altered cutaneous heat dissipation (PMID: 23150555), which led to neurokinin-3 blockers reaching phase 3 trials in women with vasomotor symptoms (PMID: 36924778). Postmenopausal women are also the population for the collagen peptide and teriparatide bone studies.
What about searches for "best peptides for women"?
It is a popular phrase, and in a research context it points the wrong way. No peptide is best for a sex. Some compounds have a published record in female subjects and some do not; the first group is the more useful one if you are designing work in a female model.
Has any peptide shown different results in women and men?
Yes, in both directions. Kisspeptin-10 raised gonadotropins in men at low amounts but did nothing measurable in women in the follicular phase, even at much higher ones (PMID: 21976724). Intranasal oxytocin raised amygdala response to fearful faces in women, the opposite direction to earlier male findings (PMID: 19632787). And in mice, NNMT deletion produced sex- and diet-specific differences in weight, fat and insulin sensitivity (PMID: 30552109).
Are research peptides legal in the UK?
Research peptides are supplied in the UK as laboratory materials rather than medicines, and the line between a licensed medicine, a food supplement and a research compound is legal, not a verdict on quality. Are Peptides Legal in the UK? sets out the framework; What Does "Research Use Only" Actually Mean? explains the label.
The Half of the Literature Still Waiting to Be Written
Count the trials here that enrolled women and the list runs 48, 58, 69, 131, 527, 1,267, 1,637, plus the rodent work. Now count how many of those results could have been predicted from the male data. Kisspeptin-10 could not. Oxytocin could not. NNMT in mice could not. Three for three, in the cases where somebody checked.
Which makes this an optimistic story. The sex gap is not a wall but a backlog: datasets never broken down by sex, models only ever run in males, compounds on shelves. The most valuable experiment is often the obvious one nobody has done. If that is your work, browse the full Crown Peptides range and start with a batch whose identity you can check on paper before you check anything else.
